The search pane of Internet Explorer (IE) by default uses the MSN search engine. (Press the F3 key to open/close the search pane.) If you install the Yahoo! toolbar or Google toolbar, the search pane will use the Yahoo! or Google search engines respectively. However, you are still limited to using just one search engine at a time. Because of this, the search pane has been was one of IE's least exploited features. Well... until now.
Search Heaven is a search page that operates from the search pane of Internet Explorer. It offers all your favourite search engines plus other Web resources, such as Wikipedia and Amazon.com. You have the convenience of accessing multiple search engines from one location and going directly to the results page each time.
| Search Engines | Yahoo!, Google, Google News, Windows Live (formerly MSN), Lycos, Excite, Altavista, Ask.com, Rediff.com (Indian), IndiaTimes.com (Indian), Guruji.com (Indian), Rambler.ru (Russian), Baidu.com (Chinese), and BBC (British). |
| Reference Sites | Answers.com, Wikipedia, Encyclopedia Britannica, Merriam Websters, Dictionary.com, Webopedia, Archive.org (type only URLs of old web pages), DMOZ (web directory), and Dictionary of Indian English (DIE) |
| Commercial Sites | Amazon.com (book titles, authors, DVDs, audio CDs, etc), eBay.com (Internet auction site), Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com) |
To get Internet Explorer use the Search Heaven search page in your computer, you need to perform a registry tweak. (DO NOT WORRY. NO REGISTRY TWEAK HAS BEEN PERFORMED JUST YET. That is your decision. Search Heaven has been displayed in your browser only to help you identify the search pane.)
If the search pane is not displayed properly, you should drag its right-side broder using your mouse pointer.
Press the F3 key or use the Ctrl+E keyboard shortcut. Alternatively, you may click the Search icon on the IE toolbar. The Search button is the one with the hand lens/magnifying glass icon.
If the Search icon is not displayed on the IE toolbar, then right-click on the toolbar, select the Customize context menu option, drag the Search button from Availble toolbar buttons box to the Current toolbar buttons box, and click the Close button. The Search button will now be displayed on the IE toolbar.
The search page at http://www.vsubhash.com/ie/ refers the search terms and the selected search engine to the redirection page at ie_redirect.asp. The redirection page is displayed in the main window of the browser. This page redirects the browser to the appropriate results page of the search engine. The redirection is performed using Javascript, meta refresh, or a user-operated hyperlink, whichever gets to work first.
The search page uses a cookie to store your preferences (the order of search engines) and to prevent your repeat visits from incrementing the Web Counter. For this reason, the cookie is set to expire after one year. The barebones redirection page uses no cookies. It does not even have a web counter. The search terms are not tracked or logged in any manner, not even for testing or maintenance purposes.
If you use Windows XP, you might see the "dog" search pane (Search Companion). If this is the case, you should click on Change Preferences » Change Internet Search Behavior » With Classic Internet Search » MSN. Close the window and open another one. Search Heaven will now be displayed in the search pane. Want to get rid of the dog for Windows Explorer too? Read about the old-but-powerful classic Windows search in my article Windows XP Tips & Tricks.
The Search Heaven registry tweak works only for IE. If you use a non-IE browser such as Netscape, Opera, or Firefox, try the "frames" version of Search Heaven at www.vsubhash.com/search. For easy access, bookmark this link.
